Today we are looking for the Best TV headphones for hearing impaired. We have many different headphones here on the site, but today we are looking at the headphones which are designed for people who have trouble hearing. This is something I know a bit about; my grandparents would always argue over how loud the TV was because my grandfather was hard of hearing and he would need the TV cranked up really loud. With the headphones that we are looking at today, that will hopefully be a thing of the past!
What Are TV Hearing Aids?
One of the most confusing things when looking for the best TV headphones for hearing impaired is that I would say it is split 50/50 for people also calling these types of headphones TV hearing aids! I just wish there was one term, but hey, here we are. So, if you see a set of headphones that are classed as being for the hearing impaired on one site and then on the next site those exact same headphones are called TV hearing aids, do not worry about it, they are the same thing.
RF Or IR?
If you look at our speakers’ reviews you will notice we have wired and wireless and there is something similar to what we are looking at here today. There are two main types of headphones for the hearing impaired. You have RF (radio frequency) and IR (infrared frequency) that are out there. It is important to know what one is what. RF means that you are free to move around and that the headphones do not have to be in line of sight of the transmitter. IR on the other hand does need to be able to see the actual transmitter. If you are just sitting on the sofa, this is not a big deal, but if you want to move around, have people moving in front of you and so on this can be an issue.
The 4 Best TV Headphones For Hearing Impaired Reviews
Here we have a great selection of what are regarded as the best TV headphones for hearing impaired. Just for fun, I am including a TV box set that you can buy which will help you test these new headphones out in style.
1: SENNHEISER SET840
2: TV Ears Digital Wireless Headset System
3: Neosonic Rechargeable Hearing Amplifier
4: Artiste APH100 Wireless Headphones for TV
SENNHEISER SET840
I know that the 380 bucks price tag is probably the first thing that catches your eye when you look at these SENNHEISER SET840, but if you were to look at any other best TV headphones for hearing impaired list, I am 99.99 percent sure these will be on it. My grandfather uses these and he has done for years without any trouble, these are the “Ferrari” of the tv headphones for the hard of hearing. These are very comfortable to wear for long periods of time and the battery lasts around 5 hours, but you can charge a second battery while using these. That is the way my grandfather uses these,
These do have RF, so you do not have to be in the line of sight of the base, my grandparents have their hidden just behind the TV so it is not in plain sight. To be fair, the dock is not all that ugly anyway so even if you did not have the ability to have it hidden it would be fine. The performance of these is great, it makes sure you can hear everything crystal clear. My grandparents got really into The Crown on Netflix and he said it was great. It has different presets that you can play around with if you want, but my grandfather just leaves it on the same thing and I have never heard him complain.
What Other People Are Saying
Have a look at this video if you want to see how these things work. This will give you a much better idea of what you can expect from these. At this price range, I would actually advise you to watch more than one video about these! Over at Amazon, these currently have over 700 reviews and 84 percent of them are for five and four stars.
TV Show Recommendation
This is actually the recommendation of my grandparents and it is The Crown which you can buy the first three seasons on DVD and Blu-Ray. It is worth noting that this is on Netflix and there are currently four seasons on there. This is about the rise of the current Queen Elizabeth and the drama surrounding the royal family from the 1940s all the way up to the modern day.
I know that the asking price for these SENNHEISER SET840 is way, way up there, but there is a very good reason as to why these are held in such high regard. I do not have a doubt in my mind that these will truly enable you to hear the TV better than you have done in years! They are comfortable to wear, easy to charge and they frequently appear in “best of” lists for a very good reason.
Pros:
- These will make sure you can actually hear what people are saying
- They are comfortable to wear even for long periods
- You can charge one battery while using another
- They are very high-quality all around
Cons:
- These are quite expensive
- Some reviews do say that the batteries have failed on them
TV Ears Digital Wireless Headset System
When most people think about the best TV headphones for hearing impaired or headphones for people who are hard of hearing in general, most of the time it is TV Ears that comes to mind. This TV Ears Digital Wireless Headset System is the real classic when it comes to devices like these. Also, the fact that they are priced at around the 80 bucks mark is a huge reason they have been so popular for so many years. I do want to say that there is an older version of these out there that are just for old-style analog TVs and that they will not work with digital TVs so make sure you are buying the set that is for a digital TV!
These are designed to be as easy to use as possible. They have a built-in battery that is charged via the dock and has a very long life too. Speaking of the dock, this is IR so you will have to make sure that the headphones are in the line of sight of the dock. These are more basic in their design so they may not be comfortable for severe binge-watching sessions of your favorite Netflix shows, but they look decent enough. The sound clarity is said to be very good with these and they do have various models. We are looking at the base version for a digital TV, but there is also one that is a “dual” which has two sets of headphones and another that has a longer-ranged signal so be sure to do some research to make sure you are getting the right one for you.
What Other People Are Saying
There are close to 2 thousand reviews for these and there are around 80 percent positive reviews. Most of the complaints tend to come from what a pain it is to replace the battery and the fact that they are IR. TV Ears do actually have their own YouTube channel which is great for seeing how these work, but also getting an idea of the various models that they have and which one may be best for you.
TV Show Recommendation
Talk about an all time classic! I am suggesting that you go and get The Sopranos: The Complete Series which features the entire series. This is one of the greatest TV shows of all time as it looks at the life of Tony Soprano, the head of the Soprano crime family that runs things in New Jersey. It is gripping stuff that will have you saying “just one more episode” many times.
There was no way we could try and find the best TV headphones for hearing impaired and not feature TV Ears in some capacity. While we have looked at the TV Ears Digital Wireless Headset System specifically, I do feel it is worth looking at the entire range to see what one would suit your needs best. These are affordable and from what I have seen, they are known for having fantastic customer service too.
Pros:
- There are many different models of TV ears out there
- These are very easy to use
- The asking price is very reasonable
- They have a very long battery life
Cons:
- Some people have said that replacing the battery is a pain in the butt
- These are IR so you will need to make sure the base is out in the open
Neosonic Rechargeable Hearing Amplifier
I came across these Neosonic Rechargeable Hearing Amplifier on Amazon and thought that they looked very interesting. As of writing these are currently priced at $149.99 and that seems like a fair price to me. These are a bit different as the idea (well from what I can tell) is that you place the microphone next to the TV and this then amplifies the sound that you are getting from the TV. It makes sense to me and I think that the fact you can put the mic away when it is not in use will probably make this appeal to many people.
These can work from around 60 feet away so even if you are sitting at the far end of the room these should be ok. The way the amplifier hangs around your neck is a very clever design. The idea here is that you do not have the amplifier pulling the actual earbuds down which would be uncomfortable and annoying. These have a rechargeable battery built in and it is pretty impressive. The neckband amplifier gives you 20 hours and the mic gives you 10. While I like that, I do wish they offered the same amount of battery life as it seems kind of pointless for one part of the device to have double the battery life.
What Other People Are Saying
On Amazon, I will admit that the customer ratings are not quite as high as I would like as these currently sit at 73 percent positive reviews from just over 200 reviews. The main complaint seems to be the longevity of these things as some have said they break after a few months. There is an official Neosonic YouTube channel that has a great showcase of these which will give you a better idea of what these are like and if they will be suitable for your needs.
TV Show Recommendation
I highly recommend this TV mini-series that I binge-watched over the course of a weekend! I am talking about The Pacific which as the name suggests is set during the Pacific Theatre of World War II. It has fantastic characters; really dangerous situations and it will have you on the edge of your seat the whole time you are watching it. If you love war shows and movies, you are going to have a great time watching this.
Hmm, I have looked over these many times and think that they are interesting. I am pretty sure we will not class these as the best TV headphones for hearing impaired, but I do think that they were worth taking a look at. The reception to these online is rather mixed, those that order these and have a set that works great, love them, but you do have to take those complaints that people have seriously.
Pros:
- I think that these look like they would be very comfortable
- The asking price seems ok
- They can be used up to 60 feet away
- Impressive battery life
Cons:
- Why is the mic battery so much lower?
- There are a few eyebrow-raising complaints about these
Artiste APH100 Wireless Headphones for TV
At only 90 bucks I think that these Artiste APH100 Wireless Headphones for TV had to make an appearance on this list. These are white which I know some people may prefer to the usual black that these tend to be. These look like they would be nice and comfortable and they are very easy to use. With multiple ways to connect to your TV, no matter what kind of TV you have, you are going to be ok with these. These are made with being as easy to use as possible in mind. In mere minutes out of the box, these will be ready for you to watch your favorite movies and TV shows.
The battery life these have is 12 hours and the dock can charge them. They even state that they will send you replacement batteries if you have any issues in that first year. These can be used all around the house and they say that they are “anti-interference” so they can transmit even through walls which is neat if you need to get up to go and grab a snack while you are binge-watching something on Netflix. These tick all the boxes for being in consideration as the best TV headphones for hearing impaired. They have an easy-to-use dial on the device where the volume can be changed as needed.
What Other People Are Saying
These are currently sitting at 75 percent positive reviews over on Amazon from around 700 reviews. Would I like that number to be closer to 80? Yes, but I think that these are still worthy of consideration as the complaints do not seem to be about the sound quality. I found this fantastic video that shows these off as well as giving you a few ideas on how this works.
TV Show Recommendation
I have picked an absolute classic for you guys here and that is The X-Files: Complete Series Collector’s Set which contains all 9 seasons and a ton of awesome extras that shows you how this iconic show was brought to life. With 9 seasons, this is going to take you a very long time to get through.
I think that these Artiste APH100 Wireless Headphones for TV look very interesting. Put it this way, if my grandfather rang me tonight saying his headphones were broken, I would probably tell him to at the very least consider these. I like how they are so easy to use and from what you read online, the sound quality these headphones produce is said to be very good.
Pros:
- The white may appeal to your home décor more than black
- They have an impressive battery life
- You can get these for well under 100 bucks
- They are very easy to use
Cons:
- The design may not be to your taste
- Will these become heavy after wearing them for a few hours?
What Are The Best Headphones For Hearing Impaired?
We have looked at some great headphones here today, but I feel that if I had to pick just one. My grandfather is on the phone, his headphones are broken and he cannot listen to his beloved Detroit Pistons play! I would tell him to go for the SENNHEISER SET840 which he is currently using as I write this. If he did not want to spend another 300 bucks, I would then suggest that he get one of the TV Ears series of headphones that they offer.
I hope this post has been useful in helping you identify some of the best headphones for the hearing impaired. You may also be keen in the best open back professional headphones under $100 and open back professional headphones under $500.
