Expensive guitars do not necessarily have lower action by default, but they often offer the potential for more precise and customizable action settings due to factors related to their construction, quality, and components. Here’s how the cost of a guitar can relate to action and playability:
- Precision Craftsmanship: Higher-end guitars are typically crafted with greater attention to detail and precision. This includes fretwork, nut and saddle placement, and neck geometry. The quality of craftsmanship can contribute to smoother and more consistent action adjustment.
- Quality Components: Expensive guitars often come equipped with high-quality hardware, such as adjustable bridge saddles and truss rods. These components allow for more accurate action adjustments to suit your playing style and preferences.
- Setup Quality: Expensive guitars are more likely to receive a meticulous setup from the manufacturer or a professional luthier before they are sold. This setup includes action adjustment, intonation, and other fine-tuning to optimize playability.
- Customization Options: Some high-end guitars may offer additional customization options, allowing you to specify your preferred action height when ordering the instrument.
- Consistency: Expensive guitars tend to have more consistent quality control, which means that the action height is more likely to meet your expectations right out of the box. Lower-quality guitars may require more extensive setup work to achieve the desired action.
While expensive guitars may offer advantages in terms of playability and action adjustment, it’s important to note that the ideal action height is a matter of personal preference. What matters most is finding a guitar with action that suits your playing style, comfort, and musical goals. You can always have the action adjusted to your liking by a professional guitar technician or luthier, regardless of the guitar’s cost.
