There are two main ways to connect speakers to each other: in parallel and in series.
Parallel connection
Parallel connection is the most common way to connect speakers. It is the simplest and most efficient way to connect multiple speakers to an amplifier. To connect speakers in parallel, you will need to use speaker cables to connect each speaker to the amplifier’s speaker terminals.
Series connection
Series connection is less common than parallel connection, but it can be used to connect speakers that have different impedances. To connect speakers in series, you will need to connect the positive terminal of one speaker to the negative terminal of the next speaker, and so on. The last speaker’s negative terminal should be connected to the amplifier’s speaker terminal.
Here are the steps on how to connect speakers to each other in parallel:
- Turn off the amplifier and speakers.
- Strip about 1/2 inch of insulation off of the end of each speaker cable.
- Connect one end of each speaker cable to the positive terminal of the amplifier.
- Connect the other end of each speaker cable to the negative terminal of the corresponding speaker.
- Turn on the amplifier and speakers and test the sound.
Here are the steps on how to connect speakers to each other in series:
- Turn off the amplifier and speakers.
- Strip about 1/4 inch of insulation off of the end of each speaker cable.
- Connect the positive terminal of one speaker to the negative terminal of the next speaker.
- Continue connecting the speakers in series until you have connected all of the speakers.
- Connect the last speaker’s negative terminal to the amplifier’s speaker terminal.
- Turn on the amplifier and speakers and test the sound.
Tips for connecting speakers to each other:
- Make sure that you use the correct gauge speaker cables for your speakers and amplifier.
- Be careful not to overtighten the speaker cable connectors, as this can damage the wires.
- Make sure that all of the speaker cables are properly secured to the speakers and amplifier.
- If you are connecting speakers in series, make sure that the speakers have the same impedance.
Here are some additional considerations when connecting speakers to each other:
- Channel: When connecting two speakers to a stereo amplifier, you will need to connect each speaker to the corresponding channel (left or right).
- Bi-amping: Bi-amping is a technique where you use two amplifiers to drive a single speaker. This can improve the sound quality of the speaker by separating the high frequencies from the low frequencies.
- Bi-wiring: Bi-wiring is a technique where you use two speaker cables to connect a speaker to an amplifier. This can also improve the sound quality of the speaker by separating the high frequencies from the low frequencies.
