Two of the best soundbars that you can pick up are the Sonos Beam and the LG SN9YGGranted, they might look like a small package, but trust me on this one, picking the right one for you will be one of the best choices you’ve made this year.

In this comparison guide, we dig below the surface and find out what exactly makes these two soundbars great. By the end of it, you should be able to pick the best soundbar for your home entertainment.

Are you ready? Let’s dive straight in!

The design and style

Let’s start off with the LG SN9YG shall we?  Image 1 - LG SN9YG 5.1.2 ch High Res Audio Sound Bar w/ Dolby Atmos and Google Assistant It features a sleek and long design with sharp edges. At the edges are metal grills that add to the robustness of the soundbar. The grill is also present at the front and back as well as covering the speakers.

But, wait, there’s more!

The LG SN9YG also features a subwoofer with the same sleek design and sharp edges. The subwoofer is covered with fabric while the front is an exposed hard plastic.

The LG however, doesn’t feature any satellite speakers.

But how does the Sonos Beam compare? Here’s the thing!

If you are looking for a small and compact soundbar, then the Sonos Beam is definitely one to check out. It is made of a solid plastic that feels top quality and robust. It also features a fabric mesh covering the whole soundbar. Unlike the LG SN9YG, it doesn’t come with a subwoofer. You do have the option of purchasing a separate subwoofer.

The Sonos also doesn’t feature satellite speakers but you can also purchase these separately to upgrade your entertainment system.

The verdict:

As far design goes, the LG SN9YG is the clear winner. Not only is it made from robust and strong plastic, but it also has a wire mesh on both speakers and on the front and sides. The Sonos is covered by a fabric that can collect dirt easily and can also tear. Not to mention that the LG SN9YG has a more stylish and sleek feel.

The Price

Having mentioned the features, it feels only natural to find out what both these soundbars will cost you.

Let’s start with the Sonos Beam this time.  It will set you back $540 on Amazon. Honestly, this is a good price considering it also offers good sound as we shall see later on. It does a good job at offering a decent quality sound that for the money is definitely worth it!

And speaking of the LG SN9YG soundbar, this one will cost you around $1000. A higher price of course but it does come with a subwoofer and the crisp clear sounds and deep bass is worth it.

The verdict:

For anyone looking for a quality soundbar at a great cost, then the Sonos Beam is definitely worth a look. On the other hand, the LG SN9YG offers more features and will provide better sound for your entertainment system.

Size and dimensions

Soundbars are all about saving space. No speaker system will do it better. So how do these two speakers perform in terms of offering a great fit for your entertainment system? The LG SN9YG is not small by soundbar standards. It is 48 inches wide, 2.2 inches tall, and has a depth of 5.7 inches. Needless to say, it’s likely not going to fit between your TV legs especially if you have one that is 55 inches and below. However, the sleek design of the LG means that you can move it slightly forward and still achieve a stylish and sophisticated look.  And let’s not forget that the LG SN9YG comes with a subwoofer that is 15.4 inches tall, 8.7 inches wide, and has a depth of 12.3 inches.

The Sonos Beam on the other hand as we mentioned earlier is all about compactness. Furthermore, it doesn’t come with a subwoofer. The Sonos Beam however is 25.6 inches wide, 2.6 inches tall, and has a depth of 4 inches. Simply put the Sonos will easily fit between the legs of most TVs.

The verdict:

If you are looking to save on space, the Sonos Beam takes the win. It is small and compact and will easily fit between the legs of most TVs. The LG however allows you to connect the subwoofer wirelessly which means that you can place it anywhere that is convenient.

Sound and output

Okay, enough chit-chat about the dimensions. What everybody wants to know is how these two soundbars perform. The LG SN9YG shines when it comes to low-frequency sounds. It offers deep bass. The LG offers up to 5 equalizer settings. It has a frequency range of 29.5Hz to 19.9KHz. You get crisp clear sounds with deep bass that are sure to take your entertainment to the next level.

But what about the Sonos Beam? The Sonos Beam has a frequency response of 53.4Hz to 15.6kHz with well-balanced output. However, while it has decent bass, it would do better with a subwoofer. But here’s where things get interesting. The Sonos Beam has a great sound stage. It produces output from its two side speakers simultaneously with the central speaker to offer home theater-quality sound. This makes it seem like the sound is coming from all over the room and not just the soundbar. What’s more, the Sonos Beam can be a good choice for a large room thanks to the loud sounds. Something to note with these speakers is that, unlike the LG SN9YG, it does not support Dolby Atmos.

The verdict:

If you want higher quality sound and deep bass, the LG SN9YG is the clear winner. What’s more, it supports Dolby Atmos content. This is not the case with the Sonos Beam which also does not offer the level of bass you get with the LG.

Extra features

The LG SN9YG has a display interface behind the front grill on the right side that shows you the level of volume that you selected. It also has touch-sensitive buttons at the top which you can use to turn on/off, and change settings.  However, the LG SN9YG has no Apple Siri or Amazon Alexa. That said, it has inbuilt Google Assistant.

So, how does the Sonos compare? Are there any extra features worth mentioning?

The Sonos lacks a display interface, however, it does offer touch-sensitive controls located on top of the soundbar. While the Sonos Beam doesn’t have Apple Siri, it features Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

The verdict:

As far as extra features go, the LG SN9YG does not outperform the Sonos Beam. while it has a display it also lacks Amazon Alexa which the Sonos Beam has.

The Verdict

Both the LG SN9YG and the Sonos Beam are excellent soundbars to help you upgrade your entertainment system. The LG SN9YG however offers louder and more crisp sounds and deeper bass.

The Sonos Beam may not offer the quality of sound like the LG, but let’s face it, it still offers decent quality sound. It also offers an excellent sound stage which makes it feel like surround sound. And let’s not forget that the Sonos is a much more affordable soundbar compared to the LG SN9YG.

If you are on a budget, you can still get good sound from the Sonos Beam. However, if you want to take your home entertainment system to the next level and you have money to spare, then the LG SN9YG is the one for you.
